Which Medicare Supplement Plan is Better? Plan F or Plan G?

Plan F vs. Plan G… This is a question that we hear all of the time. We understand – it’s confusing. First, let’s deep dive a bit into what each plan covers.

Medigap Plan F

Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage of all Medicare Supplement plans. It covers your Parts A and B deductibles, Parts A and B coinsurance or copayments, blood, Part B excess charges and 80% of your foreign travel emergency. Essentially, Plan F policyholders will only pay their monthly premium. They will not incur any out-of-pocket costs for medical expenses. Because of this, the Plan F premium is generally the most expensive. Many people choose the Plan F because of its full coverage. However, because of the difference in premiums between the Plan F and the Plan G, Plan G can sometimes be the smartest option.

Medigap Plan G

Plan G is identical to Plan F, with the exception of the Part B deductible. Once Plan G policyholders pay their Part B deductible ($183 for 2017), they essentially have the Plan F. Plan G monthly premiums are typically much less expensive than the Plan F premiums. Therefore, although the deductible is not covered, Plan G policyholders will typically save money overall with the Plan G due to the premium difference.
Ultimately, Plan G has the same benefits as the Plan F, minus the Part B deductible ($183 for 2017). Once the Part B deductible is paid, they both offer full coverage.

Which Medicare Supplement Plan Is Best for Me?

Your monthly premiums depend on many factors: current health conditions, age, gender and the company you choose for your Medicare Supplement Insurance. Although the Plan F premium is more expensive, many individuals forego the less expensive Plan G and choose the Plan F simply because it offers full coverage.
